“Relax and Enjoy”

This month we are excited to highlight the match between Lisa and Brittney. They have been matched since February 2010, and are thoroughly enjoying their time together.

Lisa is an accountant with the CPA firm, BKD, LLP., and Brittney is a student who excels in reading and art. This will be her first year in high school!

They have built a great deal of trust in their time together and have been learning how to communicate with each other more effectively over the past months. They have also been making it a point to work on problem solving skills.

Lisa is naturally introverted, but Brittney talks to everyone, even the pets at Pet Land! Lisa says that “Brittney is very outgoing and have a great sense of humor.” Brittney is also very curious about things and is very dedicated to her friends and family.

When asked what the two have been up to, Lisa told us, “we’ve learned that two people who are very different in almost every way can enjoy each other and build a strong friendship.” She went on to say that they have learned, “that our worlds were small before we met and that life is more fun together.”

Lisa and Brittney have set a very practical goal for right now – helping Brittney have a smooth transition into high school. This can be a scary time for any student, so Lisa will be there to help Brittney and her family make this transition. Lisa attended Brittney’s school orientation with her and her mom to offer support to the family.

As far as outings go, they love to try new restaurants, especially Chinese! They go for walks in the park and hang out at the mall and pet stores. Brittney loves to do crafts so they often find themselves at Hobby Lobby. They have also learned to eat lots of frozen yogurt at the Orange Leaf!

This match provides a great example that two people who seemingly come from different worlds, and may have very different personalities, can still become great friends and really add value to each other’s lives.

When asked for a bit a advice for other mentors Lisa said, “RELAX – Then just  enjoy your mentee. Appreciate your differences, but don’t get hung up on them.” Wise words from a great mentor/mentee match!
