“A Positive Attitude”
Ariana works for an orthodontist as a lab assistant making different orthodontic appliances. Kayden is a 9 year old who excels at reading and skating.
Ariana and Kayden both enjoy spending time outdoors. They love the warmer weather because they are able to do things outside, such as swimming and bike riding. Their favorite activities to do together are ice skating, going to the discovery center, and eating sushi.
The personalities between Ariana and Kayden are a lot alike. They are both pretty laid back and easy going. Ariana told us that Kayden is very polite when they go on their outings. One area that Ariana and Kayden have grown in during their relationship is communication.
When asked what advice Ariana would give to a new mentor, she said to be open minded about trying new things and maybe even do things to don’t necessarily enjoy but you know that your mentee does. Any experience can be fun if you do it with a positive attitude.
“Actively Looking For Moments”
Steve works at Global University as a faculty member with three of the four schools within the university. He primarily works with the Berean School of the Bible. He also works at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary. Will is a 9 year old who loves playing basketball. Steve said that Will is going to be a great basketball player someday. He also is very good at playing pool.
Since being matched, Steve and Will have learned to trust and to communicate with one another. They talk about things that are going on in their lives. Steve shares his own personal experiences and the lessons that he has learned while growing up. One of the things that they have learned together is that each of their choices have consequences. If we make bad choices then we have to face the consequences of those bad decisions. However, if we make good choices then we can embrace the consequences of good decision-making.
During the summer months, this match can usually be seen outside playing basketball or visiting local parks. During the winter months, Steve puts together an art bag which contains colored pencils, coloring books, paper, decks of cards, etc. They go to the library and play games, draw, and color. Steve taught Will how to play a dice game called Farkle that they both enjoy. They have also seen their fair share of Chuck E Cheese.
The advice that Steve would give to a new mentor would be to look for opportunities with your mentees to speak into their lives. Listen to them when they are speaking to you. Give advice that speaks directly into their situation. Be actively looking for those moments.
“People Care”
This month’s match has a goal to eat at every restaurant in Springfield!
George is a Construction Supervisor at Queen City Remodeling and Restoration. Jason enjoys doing anything that keeps him active. George told us that Jason is definitely caring. He is also an honest young man.
Some of the things that they like to do together are playing basketball, putt-putt, bowling, go-carts, and of course—eating! Since being matched, George and Jason have grown in their trust and communication with each other.
When they first met, Jason did not really have too much to talk about and now they talk about everything. Jason has learned that people care!
George said that with his own children, discipline makes things a lot easier. Trying to get your point across can be difficult without discipline. George has challenged Jason to be on the Honor Roll, as well as trying to be a bit more punctual.
Some advice that George would give to a new mentor is that you and your mentee are both a clump of clay. The key is to mold yourselves together. You will both learn so much about each other and about yourselves.
